With the coronavirus, there is a lot of contradictory information. One of them is regarding the use of masks. Even though it seems obvious to me that it can only help to protect people, others think that they have the right not to wear them… In the Netherlands it took sometime before the government decided that they should make mandatory to wear masks in public areas. Well, there was a problem, there is a legislation which prevents people in the Netherlands to hide part of their face!!! Now they have to vote a new law to be able to force people to wear masks. Sometime ago, gangsters were wearing masks not to be recognized, now it looks like potentially contaminating people want to be recognized….
Focus on our modern beekeeping project
In 2015 we started to look for funds to equip villagers with beehives. Today there are 148 beekeepers from which 80 women. They are spread over 10 villages.
Modern beekeeping is a very interesting project from several angles:
- Revenue wise, it gives the beekeeper an income between 50 and 70 euro per year for an apiary of 5 hives
- Environment wise, modern beekeeping does not destroy trees like traditional beekeeping
- Pollination wise, the more hives close to the fields, the better the harvest will be.
Other aspects which makes this project very positive:
- Very little space used by the hives, making it easy for women to be part of this project
- Work is done by the bees and beside some maintenance and the honey harvest, this project does not require a lot of work.
We have been able to organize the beekeepers in cooperatives in the participating villages. This will help them to get organized and eventually get funding for equipment from local institutions.
Production is something but harvested honey needs to be sold. Our local association APPA is buying the raw honey at a very good price for the keepers and conditions it for sale in Burkina Faso.
ASAP has been able to fund close to 1.000 hives. We re very thankful to all donors who have made this possible.
It is clear that with the increase of the volume of honey bought by APPA we have to start to look at the export market. Since 2018, honey from Burkina can be imported in the EU.

Sayings of the week
“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious the time is you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savoured.”
“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.”
Until next week,
