[:nl]Only one week to go in this trip and it will be a busy one.
This week has been a bit crazy as well: 4 trips out of Bobo and unloading of the container.
On monday evening, we heard that we had to be attending a court case we have against a local merchant. We delivered a lot of corn bags to him in 2011 and he has not paid us. We found out later on that he had done similar things with others. After many tries to settle this problem without success, we appointed a lawyer and the man is in jail since almost 2 months. The case was not heard on Tuesday but was postponed for one week, even though Emmanuel and Jean Francois sat there from 8 am to 2 pm.

On Tuesday I went by myself to the village of Bona. We had arranged that the translation of the meeting be done by Germain, the school director. The meeting went well with a lot of participants. During the meeting at least 10 people at different times of the “palabre” ask for the construction of a medical center. ASAP is looking for funds since at least 3 years without success. During the rainy season, a woman had to go the medical center 7 km away to give birth and died on the way, partly because of the time it took to get to the medical center. It is really a priority for them. If you know of any funding possibility, do not hesitate to contact us.

On Wednesday it was “container time”. The container we had loaded at the end of September in Naarden, had arrived and we needed to distribute the good. A lot of the items in the container will get to the villages, but they need some sorting out. Our garage is now full with boxes waiting for the next trip of Eugénie.

On Friday and Saturday we went to Nefrelaye to apply the Appreciative Inquiry Method with education theme. Education was chosen because we saw that recruiting the children for the nursery school and the primary school was not easy. Even though we had some training ourselves of the AI method, we thought best to ask again for help of Lido to animate the discussion.

The 2 days we spent there gave a chance to the parents and the teachers to express themselves. One more time we acted as a filter between the 2 parties. If we are not there, nothing is said. If we are there one side tell us their story and at the same time the other party hears it.
On the first day the teachers emitted several reasons why the school was not running smoothly: lack of participation of the parents in the follow up of their kids, school fees not paid, too many kids saying to the parents that they are going to school and not reaching it…. They did not offer any solutions to those problems. The teachers had to go to their classes and they left. After they left, the parents asked us if the teachers could come back so that they can also give their reasons behind some of the school difficulties. All this is not really the way the AI method works since we are not supposed to talk about negative things or problems. But the teachers looked really uneasy during the first session and they were putting all the blame on the parents.
Part of the first day we discussed about positive things in which the parents were involved about the school. They mentioned the covered area they have built between the 2 school buildings. We ahd all the details about the project starts, the planning of it, the distribution of responsibilities, the collect of funds to realize it and its realization. It was quite impressive.
blog-25-11-2012-6
The second day we had asked the teachers to come back. We first asked the women if they had something to say. They did not dare to say anything and thanked the teachers for their good work!! One of the person in the board of the parents association said that he had several complaints from parents about children coming home from school often beaten with wounds.
Then other parents confirmed this situation. One of the female teachers was beating her pupils badly. The teachers gave their excuses and said that this would not happened again!!! We will follow up with the local supervisor to make sure that this will stop. The group of 6 teachers were very much on the defense and again on the second day did not offer any solutions to help parents follow up on their kids. But the teachers attitude can explain a large part of the school problems.
We left the villagers with some homework. They have a list of activities (with responsibilities and dates) which can help the school to work better.

What we also find out is that a lot of the young men of the villages are going to work in the gold mines. This is becoming a big problem in Burkina. Very few come back in the village richer and without diseases. It is difficult to have the kids staying in the village where they have little perspectives and where the father is very often exploiting his sons.

On the way to the river
We stop and catch up
On the latest village gossip
Two sisters, two girlfriends having a chat
We talk of Amadou
And how he has married wife number two
And of Seydou
And how he flew into a rage over
His wife Paige
And her horrendous cooking
He is now thinking about
kicking her out
All over cooking
We chuckle
Maybe we will give her a lesson or two
On how to prepare a meal for two
That’s sure to please and appease her man
Into letting her stay
If she wants to that is
We chat about Mama Lucy
And her cheating ways
Yesterday she was caught
In Chief Malay’s
Boat
In a compromising position
We whisper and blush
At the thought
Wishing we were as daring and free as she
But as for us
We are tied up by the chains of domesticity
And we must return to our chores
Of fetching water
And washing clothes
And all those other never-ending tasks
The daily life of a wife
Interrupted for a moment
As we live other people’s lives
In our daily gossip on the way to the river
