Eugenie arrived beginning of the week. Nice to not be alone in the house.

The oxen and cows of the LAP

Beginning of the lectures at the LAP

So the final count for this school year is 271 students (140 girls and 131 boys).

We have recruited a full time agronomist and a full time nurse.

The 60 new students in first year

The 34 students in the 6th year

Students of 5th and 6th year are between 17 and 22 years old. We will experiment what we called “quartier libre”. The students of 5th and 6th year will have the possibility to go out of the LAP area on Sunday afternoons. They will have to in group of at least 3 people and will have to wear a sweatsuit provided by the LAP.

The parents were not in favor of this, but we believe that we have to give the older students a bit of space.

Cotton saga

Cotton flowers

I talked a lot about the cotton company in Burkina. This time I am looking at it from another angle: agricultural research. Farmers have decreased a lot the acreage where they cultivate cotton. However, the funds allocated to research at the National Research Institute for Agriculture never diminish.

Via the cotton companies such as Sofitex, a lot of cash is made available to the government for their “black box” used in part for election funding. The other crops such as corn, sorghum, are not under the control of one company which makes it difficult to control.

The budget of the National Research Institute for Agriculture is controlled by the government so they need to “fertilize” cotton research instead of other crops such as peanuts, corn, sorghum, ……
