This will be my last blog until September. Hopefully then I will be able to go back to Burkina Faso. Let’s hope for the best.
It is supposed to be the rainy season but the rains are not on schedule. AS if Instability and COVID-19 are not enough, a draught would be terrible for the people of Burkina.
News about the LAP
COVID-19 has really disturbed the school year. Confinement meant that students were sent back to their villages. We have tried to minimize the negative impacts of the confinement by sending homework to the students in their villages and also by sending the teachers in the villages to work with the exam classes (4th and 6th year).
The government reopened the schools only for the exam classes on June 1st . At the LAP we asked all the intermediary classes to come back on June 8th. We wanted to finish their program since we had lost only one month of teaching. Those students are now back home to help their parents for field works.
The exam for the 4th year (BEPC) and for the 6th year (BEP Agricole) started on July 14th. Lets hope for the best for our students.
The students of the 5th year have started an internship of 2½ months on June 15th. It is part of their curriculum. They are doing this training in our farms and at the LAP. Since at the same time they are helping us cultivate, they receive 60.000FCFA which is the amount of the cash needed for their tuition. They cannot help in the fields of their parents but they compensate that by paying their tuition.
Refugees in Burkina
There are a lot of refugees and displaced people in Burkina. Via a contact with the local UNHCR, we are looking at finding 5 LAP sponsorships for children of those families.
We have launched a special fundraising campaign on Global Giving to fund these scholarships. We hope we will succeed in finding this funding so we might provide a quality education to a few refugee children.
